Es profesora de Antropología en la Universidad de Chicago y directora del Center for Contemporary Theory de Chicago.Junto con John L. Comaroff, ambos son profesores honorarios de la Universidad de Ciudad del Cabo.Conjuntamente han publicado Of Revelation and Revolution (vols. 1 y 2, 1991 y 1997), Ethnography and the Historical Imagination (1992), Law and Disorder in the Postcolony (2006), Ethnicity, Inc. (2009) y Zombies et frontières à l’ ère néolibérale. Le cas de l’Afrique du Sud postcoloniale (2010).
